Title of the course: HERBST APPLIANCE including consecutive interpretation of 4 hours

Herbst appliance treatment has become a predictable and successful treatment approach for certain Class II malocclusions in orthodontics. The presentation is based on more than 25 years evidence long-term research: i.e. controlled clinical research of the "healing growth potential" of the condyle and the fossa articularis.
There will be shown clinical treatments, and results of manipulation with the natural bone growth. The biomechanical effect of the Herbst appliance on the jaw growth will translate and rotate the mandible, depending on the craniofacial morphology, in a counterwise posterior or anterior direction.
Treatment consists of two fases:
1. Biomechanical Changes of the natural growth direction and stimulation of the growth amount of the perichondral areas of the condyle and the fossa articularis, i.e. bone modeling, and
2. Finishing and Occlusal Retention with a positioner to protect the new formed bone in the condyle and fossa articularis against the patients normal growth direction.
Fase 1 is normally finished in lesser than one year, and fase 2 has to be carried out untill ending of natural bone growth.
The presentartion will also include results of a histomorphometric and scanning electron microscopy study of human condylar cartilage and bone tissue changes in relation to age (18-31 years).
